Free VPN plans compared for the UAE: Proton VPN, Windscribe and TunnelBear

Checked 30 October 2026

A free VPN is fine for occasional use on public Wi-Fi, as long as it comes from a company that earns its money from a paid plan rather than from your data. Three free plans pass that test. None of them includes a UAE server.

Free plan	Data	Countries	Devices
Proton VPN Free	No cap, no ads	10, chosen for you; no UAE	1
Windscribe Free	10 GB a month with a confirmed email (2 GB without)	10; no UAE	No limit
TunnelBear Free	2 GB a month	No UAE location on any plan	No limit

1. Proton VPN Free

No data cap and no ads, from a company whose no-logs policy Securitum has audited every year since 2022. The limits: one device, and the app picks the server from 10 countries (Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland, Norway, Switzerland, Singapore, Mexico, Canada and the US). The Stealth protocol, which disguises VPN traffic, works on Free too. Our Proton VPN review.

2. Windscribe Free

10 GB a month once you confirm an email address, in 10 countries (US, Canada, UK, Hong Kong, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Norway and Romania), on any number of devices. Paying for one location with Build-a-Plan is a cheap way to add Dubai later. Our Windscribe review.

3. TunnelBear Free

The simplest app here, with yearly Cure53 security audits since 2016, but only 2 GB a month, and no UAE location on any plan. Its GhostBear obfuscation is not available on iPhone.

Free trials of paid VPNs

NordVPN: a 7-day trial through the app on 1- and 2-year plans; first-time Android users can get 3 days through Google Play.
Surfshark: a 7-day trial on 12- and 24-month plans through its mobile apps.
ExpressVPN: a trial on iPhone and Android through the app stores, with a payment method.
Private Internet Access: 7 days for new mobile users subscribing through the app store.
CyberGhost: 24 hours on Windows and Mac without payment details.

Trials renew into paid plans unless you cancel in time; set a reminder.

Free VPNs we do not recommend

VPN Gate: free and run by a university, but it keeps connection logs for three months or more and may share them with police. Its phone “apps” in the stores are made by other developers.
Unknown apps with no company behind them: see the risks of free VPNs for what researchers found inside such apps.

Need a UAE IP address?

No free plan offers one. See VPNs with a UAE server.
